Spinoza thought that there exist two independent modes: material and spiritual. Everything happens simultaneously in this two aspects of the world.

  1. For me this is not a precise interpretation of Spinoza’s thoughts. The depiction is misleading. Spinoza stressed the unity of spirit and material more than many other philosophers (especially Descartes) did. The division of the two is not his original thought, on the contrary he tried to appropriate them in contradicting the Western tradition of philosophy.
